How to handle a seagull manager?

I am in a new position as a manager. I have a VP as my supervisor. This person often comes in and tells me how bad I am doing gives me directives to do and leaves. When I do these things told to do and they backfire it is my fault. I have discovered this boss is what is called a seagull manager. I am usually a high performing employee but as time goes by I am finding my self esteem dropping because I am always told I am doing everything wrong. So how can I build my self esteem back up with my job. I know my boss is not going to change so I just have to deal with it. There is no one else there to say I am doing a good job. So how can I maintain my own moral? Has anyone ever been in a similar situation?
