Are football fixtures randomly chosen?

No. They have to make sure that local rivals from the same city don't have home matches on the same day in case of trouble between rival fans (eg Birmingham and Villa, Man U and Man City never play home games on the same day) and they also consider travelling for the Boxing Day fixtures, those fixtures are kept as local as possible.
